Doing it, step by step
Check what your region's Roku store offers
From the home screen, open Streaming Channels, then Search Channels, and look for IPTV Smarters Player. Availability varies by country and Roku adds and removes entries in this category without notice. If it is there, install it and carry on with the next step. If it is not, skip to the mirroring steps further down, which work everywhere.
Install IPTV Smarters Player and open it
Add the channel, then return to the home screen and find it at the bottom of your channel list, which is where anything newly added lands. Move it up the list now using the star button on the remote and the Move Channel option - otherwise you will be scrolling past a dozen streaming services every time you want to watch television.
Sign in with your Xtream details
The app asks for a server address, a username and a password. Enter the server exactly as it arrived on WhatsApp, including the http:// prefix and the port number at the end. Roku's on-screen keyboard is slow and unforgiving, so check each field before submitting rather than after. The channel list then downloads, which takes a minute or two.
Prune the list and build favourites
Roku's remote has no shortcut buttons worth speaking of, which makes navigating twenty-five thousand entries painful unless you cut it down first. Hide the categories the household will never watch and add your regular channels to favourites. This is not optional housekeeping on Roku the way it is elsewhere - it is the difference between a usable television and a frustrating one.
Set up mirroring as a fallback
On the Roku, go to Settings, then System, then Screen mirroring, and set the mode to Prompt or Always allow. On an Android phone, use Smart View or Cast; on Windows, press Windows and K. Whatever is playing on the smaller screen then appears on the television. iPhones cannot mirror to Roku directly without a third-party app, which is a limitation of Apple's AirPlay rather than anything Roku controls.
Put the Roku on a wired connection if you can
A Roku Ultra has an Ethernet port; the sticks do not. If you are using an Ultra on a main television, use the port. Roku's Wi-Fi is merely adequate and Ultra HD feeds leave little headroom, so a cable removes the most common source of evening stuttering at a stroke.
Run both services for a week before cancelling
Because Roku is the most limited platform here, this matters more than usual. Keep the old set-top box on another input and use the Roku as your main way of watching for several days. If the app turns out to be too restrictive for the household, you will want to know that while you still have the old service and can instead spend thirty dollars on a stick.
When something goes wrong
IPTV Smarters Player is not in my Roku store
Regional availability is genuinely inconsistent and there is no workaround, because sideloading is not possible on current Roku firmware. Your options are mirroring from a phone, which works but is clumsy as a permanent arrangement, or plugging a Fire TV Stick into a spare HDMI port on the same television. The second is what most people end up doing.
Mirroring connects but the picture stutters
Mirroring sends everything over Wi-Fi twice - once to the phone and again to the television - so it is far more sensitive to a weak signal than direct playback. Move closer to the router, switch the phone to the 5 GHz band, and close other apps on the phone. If it remains poor, that is the ceiling of mirroring rather than a fault, and a directly installed player is the real answer.
The login is refused on the Roku keyboard
Roku's keyboard makes it easy to miss a character without noticing. Re-enter all three values slowly. The server address needs http:// at the start and the port at the end. If it still fails, sign in on a phone using any player to establish whether the account itself is fine, which separates a typing problem from an account problem in under a minute.
Channels play but there is no programme guide
Guide support in the Roku player is more limited than on Android, and some builds show little or none. This is a limitation of the app rather than the subscription - the guide data is being sent. If the guide is important to the household, it is one of the clearest reasons to add a cheap stick alongside the Roku.

Questions people ask about the Roku
Can I sideload a player onto a Roku?
No. Roku closed the private channel system that made this possible and there is no developer mode equivalent to the Firestick's. Any guide telling you otherwise is describing how Roku worked several years ago. Your realistic choices are the approved app, mirroring, or a different device on the same television.
Is a Roku good enough as a main television device for this?
It is workable rather than good. If the Roku is already built into the television and the household mostly watches a handful of channels, it will do the job. If you want a proper grid guide, recording or multi-view, Roku cannot provide them and a Fire TV Stick or Android box will, for well under the cost of one month of cable.
Does mirroring from an iPhone work?
Not directly, because Roku does not support AirPlay on most models and Apple does not permit the alternative. Some newer Roku televisions have added AirPlay 2 support, so it is worth checking your specific model in Settings. Otherwise, mirroring on Roku is an Android and Windows feature in practice.
Will my Roku account or Roku subscriptions be affected?
No. Installing a player changes nothing about your Roku account or anything else you use the device for. It simply appears as another channel in your list alongside the streaming services already there.
