Doing it, step by step
Copy the link in full
The link is long and everything after the question mark matters, because that section carries your username and password. A link truncated at the question mark will produce an empty list rather than an error message, which is a confusing way to fail. Copy it whole, and copy it on a phone or computer rather than trying to transcribe it.
Open it in VLC on a computer
In VLC, choose Media then Open Network Stream on Windows, or File then Open Network on a Mac. Paste the link and press Play. The channel list loads into the playlist pane. This is the fastest way to prove a subscription is alive, which makes it a genuinely useful diagnostic even if you never watch television this way.

Or add it to Kodi through an add-on
Kodi needs the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on. Enable it, set the M3U playlist source to the link, and restart Kodi. It works, though Kodi is the most involved route in this guide and is worth choosing only if you already use Kodi for other things.
Understand what you are giving up
However you use it, an M3U link carries live channels alone. There is no programme guide and no on-demand library, and no setting inside any player will make those appear, because they are not in the file. If you find yourself missing them, add the account again using the Xtream login instead - the same subscription, a different and better format.
Use it as a portable fallback
Because an M3U link needs nothing but a player that accepts a URL, it travels well. A laptop taken away for a week, a borrowed computer, an unfamiliar television with VLC on it - the link works in all of them without installing an account anywhere or leaving anything behind. It is a poor way to watch at home and a genuinely useful one when you are somewhere temporary, which is the honest summary of what this format is for.
Keep the link private
The link contains your credentials in plain text within the address itself. Anyone who has it has your subscription. Do not post it in forums or group chats when asking for help, and if you think it has been seen by someone it should not have been, ask on WhatsApp for the account to be reissued.
When something goes wrong
The playlist opens but no channels appear
Almost always a truncated link. Check that everything after the question mark is present, since that is the part carrying your credentials. Then confirm the link has not been wrapped across two lines by the application you copied it from, which silently inserts a break in the middle.
The list loads but every channel fails to play
If the list itself arrived, the link is fine and the account is alive, so the problem is downstream. Try a different player to establish whether it is app-specific. Where a firewall or an internet provider blocks streaming ports, the list will load - it is fetched over an ordinary web request - while playback fails, which is a useful signature to recognise.
The link worked yesterday and not today
Check first whether the subscription has simply come to the end of its term. If it is current, the link may have been reissued after a change to the account, in which case the old one stops working by design. Ask on WhatsApp for the current link rather than trying to repair the old one.
Channels are in one enormous unsorted list
That is the format rather than a fault. M3U carries limited grouping information and most players do little with what there is. If an organised, searchable list matters to you - and after a week it will - the Xtream login is the answer.

Should I use the M3U link or the Xtream login?
The Xtream login, in every case where your player offers it. It brings the programme guide and the on-demand library, which the M3U link cannot carry. Keep the M3U link for players that accept nothing else, such as Smart IPTV, and for quick tests in VLC.
Why do the free M3U lists online stop working?
Because they are streams scraped from somewhere else and republished for anyone to take, so thousands of people hit the same source at once and it collapses under the load. There is no guide, nobody maintaining them, and no one to contact when they die. They use the same file format as a real subscription, which is precisely why they cause so much confusion.
Is it safe to share my M3U link?
No. Your username and password are written into the address itself, so anyone holding the link holds your subscription and consumes your connection limit. Treat it exactly as you would a password, and never paste it into a forum post when asking for help.
Does the M3U link expire?
It lasts as long as the subscription behind it does, and a renewal carries it forward unchanged. It stops working if the account itself is reissued - after a security concern, for instance - in which case a new link is sent on WhatsApp and the old one dies immediately. There is no separate expiry on the link on its own.
Can I use the same link on several devices?
Yes, as many as you like. The plan limits how many streams play at once rather than how many devices hold the link. On a single-connection plan, a second device will be refused while the first is playing.
